Re: 1989 150GT Johnson

you should consider having 2 batteries if you keep electronics on all the time without the engine.

A simple 1, 2 or both switch and 2 batteries plus the wiring and you're all set. Its what alot of fishing boats do so that if theres ever a dead battery they can switch over to start again.

If you don't keep electronics on with the engine off, the battery should be more than enough, as the electronics would be running off the alternator while the engine is on, not the battery itself.

Sony224422,

This is the first time that I ever had this problem with the battery and since I'm getting a new battery which is bigger than the one I now have I should be okay with 1 starting battery.

Thanks for the input.

yep, one starting battery should be fine.

but i wouldn't trust it to run all your electronics when the motors off.. too much wear and tear

Sony224422,

You're the first person that I know of who suggested 2 batteries for starting or one battery for starting and one battery just for electronics. Like I said before, this battery is at least 5 years old and I never had a problem with it before the other day. So I hoping that by putting in a new and bigger battery in that I won't have this problem again for some time.

What kind of boat and motor are you running and what kind of battery setup do you have?

Re: 1989 150GT Johnson

which boat hehe..

i have a 19 ft rabalo with a 175 yamaha with a starting battery, group 27, and a battery, also group 27, for the fish finder, radio, nav, live bait well and lights while the motor is off.

On my 17 ft grady white with a 115 johnson i have a group 27 for everything, since its a ski boat and i don't really turn the motor off if im in it.

On the 20 ft makio with an 88 johnson spl, i have the same set up as the rabalo as it is a fishing boat as well, with sonar and loran.

I just go out into the ocean alot, and i would really hate to have a dead battery out there from all my onboard electronics killing it.

Sony224422.

Well you certainly have enough boats. I just have 1 a Stratos 285 Pro with the a 1989 150 Johnson motor.

I had a load test done on my starting battery yesterday and it is totally dead. I'm still waiting for my new Group 27 starting battery to come in but as of yesterday it's still not here.

I have a extra group 31 deep cycle battery that I got a couple of years ago and never used it yet so maybe I'll use it for my electronics, although it is not a good idea to use a deep cycle battery for that purpose.

It's just setting there because I need 2 batteries for my trolling motor and so I never used it. I told my friend that I wanted a starting battery but he got me a deep cycle battery by mistake so I took it anyway and never used it.

Here is a link that has the 3 previous links about batteries plus 6 more links. Just click on the 9 batteries on the left side of the page and you will learn all there is to know about all types of batteries.

Which boat of yours do you use the most?

I have starting and dual purpose for the two center consoles, and a dual purpose for my grady white.

I was under the impression that a deep cycle was meant to be drained and recharged.

Re: 1989 150GT Johnson

What battery do most people connect their electornics, livewell pumps, aireators, and trim motor and any other equipment? Do you connect them to your starting battery or to your deep cycle batteries?

OR do some people split them up and put some on the deep cycle and some on the starting battery?

What is the best setup to use?

I have only my trolling motor connected to the deep cycle batteries. I have two 12 volt batteries connected in series for my 24 volt trolling motor.

I have everything else connected to my starting battery.

Is this the best setup to use?

What do most of you use on your boat?

Re: 1989 150GT Johnson

i personally have just the starter battery for the engine and the electronics on the other. but i also have a switch so i can use 1 or both. it makes things alot easier if you come across a dead battery. But then again, you may not want to worry about 4 batteries on your boat.
