oil ratio question for old outboard

what would be the oil ratio for a 1955 evinrude would it be 26:1?

Close, 24:1. :)

"Unofficially", I wouldn't be shy of 32:1 with modern outboard oil. ;)

do you think if i use 32:1 i would be safer using low friction synthetic oil.

For safety's sake stick with 24:1 till you see how it runs before changing to a leaner mix. (Just my opinion though)

Those old 25s are noted for taking the wrist pin bearings out on leaner mixtures. Running it at 24:1 assures you keep the volume of oil in there, as it acts as a cushion on some bearings as much as a lubricant... Reduce the volume in the mix and you reduce that cushioning effect...
