85"merc18xd carb problems?

I have an 85 18hp merc that i can only keep running if i use the primer bulb.At idle it will run for 5min, then it will need a pump with the bulb.Go's another 5 then needs more fuel.As i increase the throttle the problem doesnt change, but needs to be primed more frequently(every 5 to 10 seconds at WOT) Will a carb kit fix this.Or is it more likely the fuel pump.

Sounds like the Fuel Pump to Me.....

I think I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump also.Should I put a carb kit in or should I just deal with the pump?Another Question if any one might know? what year is this motor? 18hp xd s/n 7220707 the guy I bought it off of said it was a 85' but I'm not sure? thanx in advance this forum rocks!
