Top seal removal

I have a 1970 Johnson 20 hp motor, and I need to replace the top seal.

My manual recommends using a specialized puller which I haven't been able to find anywhere. I've spent a lot of time looking, both online and off.

Does anyone know where to locate this tool? If not, is there an alternate way to remove the seal short of disassembling the powerhead?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is easy with the tool. Very difficult without it. And if you aren't careful you can break the thin aluminum crankcase area where the armature plate rotates around.

I have dug lots of them out before I broke down and bought the tool. Usually wind up taking it out in little pieces.

Take it to a shop that has the proper tool, It could save you a lot of grief.

I would love to have the tool, but it's proven pretty elusive. Even the guy from our local Johnson dealer sounded doubtful.

I may well have to dig it out.

I posted my other reply before seeing your second one. Good advice. I think I'll take it.
