Hey guys, I ran through some weeds yesterday with my 1997 Johnson 115 and didn't realize they were blocking my water intake vents on my LU, so when I opened it up to get on plane, my overheat alarm went off about 30 seconds later and my Hot light came on.

I instantly slowed down and shut it off, lifted the motor out and saw all the weeds, cleaned them all off, but the LU was really hot. I put it back in the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes, and then started it again and let it idle to get some water moving through it. The light and alarm were still on for about another minute while idling and then both went off.

I let it idle for another 5 minutes or so and then went on my way, and it ran perfect for the rest of the day.

So I guess my question is, could I have done any damage, or does the overheat alarm come on before you get hot enough to do any real damage?

Also what temp does it usually come on at?

Thanks.

you probably did not damage. but next time stop at the sounds of the alarm. it's there for a reason. change the gear lube for safe measure.

Re: Heated my 115 yesterday

Hey tashasdaddy, I stopped as soon as I heard the alarm and shut it right down. Then I tilted it up and removed all of the seaweed, let it sit for about 5 minutes and then started it up again and it was fine.

I think I'll be ok, as soon as I started it up again and got some water moving through it, it cooled right off and ran great for the rest of the day, when I got home I took the cover off and looked around and didn't see anything melted or any sign of overheating. I will check the gear oil and see how it looks.

Do you know what temp kicks the overheat on, on this motor by any chance? Just curious. Also does the overheat come on in enough time to keep you from doing any damage?

The overheat module will normally go off at about 240 degrees. When it cools down it will reset itself. I think you are ok. Keep an eye on the pee stream, if it apprears weak, then might consider a new water pump.

you did good, just didn't read that way. you'd be surprized how many keep running thinking it will clear up.
