Hey all,

I'm finally an owner of a decent boat. I have bought this boat (1996 Bayliner Capri 2050LS Mercruiser Inboard Alpha One) in January 2007. It work amazing until last weekend.

The boat starts well, first or second key. Once I take it on the lake, after 5 minutes at 3500 rpm the engine sudenlly dies. Then I start it again, after 5 more minutes the engine dies at 3000 rpm. Then it dies at 2000 rpm. Then I can only go at like 1500 rpm.

I'm not sure what turns off the engine...it may be because of the heating. If any of you guys had this problem or have any ideas of what I should do, I would greatlly appreciate it.

The first thing you have to do is determine if you have an ignition or fuel problem.
Do you loose spark when it won't start? (Check for spark)
Do you loose fuel when it won't start (with engine off, pump throttle and see if gas comes out of accelerator pump holes in carb)

Then you will at least know which direction to go instead of trying everything at once.

Thank you for the quick reply...

I think the sparks and fuel are woking fine because the first 5 - 10 minutes when the boat is "cold", it works perfect. So if it had any spark or fuel problem then it wouldn't work at all...right?!

It won't stop running if it has spark and fuel, so which one is missing.
Doen't matter what you THINK it's doing, check and be sure.

When the motor, Just Quits,..??...... There's a Reason..........

It's Lost either it's Spark or it's Fuel supply,.........

You have to determine,... When it Quits,...... Which it's Lost..........

Then you can go about Fixing the issue..........

Yea, I'm sure you guys are right...the fuel or the sparks just stop working. But what troubles me is why at the begining the boat works and not ony that but it dies at lower and lower rpm.

I would guess that it is a fuel problem......
Is the choke operating properly?.....
Try hooking up an external gas tank, (6 gallons) & run @ 3500 rpms like when it happened before......
Change the water separating fuel filter first......
& check the screen at the carb......:)

Sure sounds like a lot of work for nothing if he's loosing spark. That's why the first thing you do is isolate the problem as to fuel or ignition.

Or just do it the hard way and buy a lot of random parts to replace. You may get lucky! Besides, what do mechanics know about proper diagnostic procedures? It's probably just the flux capacitor anyway.

You're right Don, it would be far easier to check for spark as you suggest....
I just figgered that if the boat is new to him that checking the filters would be a cheap, easy way to start.....
When it's that intermittant thing at varying rpm's I usually think fuel problem, which is not always the case......:)

The Answer to that Troubling Thought is Exactly the Answer that We're trying to help you Find..................

Which brings Us back to the Question,..........
Do you loose spark when it won't start? (Check for spark)
Do you loose fuel when it won't start (with engine off, pump throttle and see if gas comes out of accelerator pump holes in carb)
Don even included the "How To"s of it...................

Re: Mercruiser - Bayliner Capri 2050LS engine dies when heats up!

Thank you all for helping me out. I already thought of changing the water separating fuel filter...which I tried but it was on so tight that was not able to get it off. This weekend I'm going up the cottage with a new water separating fuel filter and try to replace it. I hope thats going to fix it...

Cheers!

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I just purchased a 1998 Capri with a 3.o and am having the exact same problem
