Merc 150 pops out of gear

Hi, My Merc developed this problem on our last trip. When I started to get the boat on plane it seemed to pop out of gear. I could move forward slowly but if I gave it gas it would start to go and then it would rev up.
I put the boat in reverse and it was oK. It just sounded like it was not staying in gear. This is not related to my other post. Any Ideas? Thanks

Year? Motor exact type?
Probably need new gears (dogs shot)...look for NOS/Used Ebay, Craigslist, complete...etc..
Gonna have to come apart anyway..

Also try adjusting shift cable to favor forward more... you might get lucky.

Re: Merc 150 pops out of gear

Or you can remove your shift cable and manually take the engine thru the FNR cycle, marking the point where each gear is encountered......be sure to manually rotate the prop as you go into R to get the cogs to line up.....don't force it into gear.

Then get your remote cable and while moving the shift lever, mark the positions of the end (that connects to the engine).

Then it's a matter of looking at your marks to see if you are centered so that you get equal travel of F and R or if you are off.

Like Clams said, you might be favoring one side and just a simple adjustment of the barrel will solve your problem.

If you are centered, and don't go far enough, you may need a new control box to get the slack out of the system.
