Am I being taken for a boat ride?

I took my Inline 6 Head in yesterday to a machine shop and they showed me where two of the valves were leaking. They also tested for cracks and warping and cleaned the heads. They gave me a price of $68 for repair. Today they called and said the valve guides were bad and to repair, that brought the price up to $201. Does that sound unusual? Am I being taken for a ride on the valve guides repairs?

Price a new head, then compare.

Chances are about 200% a motor that old would have worn valve guides.

I figured the valve guides would be worn, but I've never had that work done before and was wondering if the $133 is a decent price for the valve guide repairs. Don - I've never priced a new head and am a bit scared to:)

Head Kit Merc PN 937-4287A2 price $1,938.45

Valve guides aren't sold by Merc, but figure you will have to remove 12, reinstall 12, then ream to proper size.
People don't work for free.
$201 sounds way low to me.

Sounds like you're getting a good deal. I'd give them all my work in the future.

Thanks guys! That does seem to sound like a very fair deal then.

Don - Jeez, I believe I'll pass on that new head. ;)

So low it makes me wonder how good of a job will be done.
I have had brand new machined heads stick a valve because they didn't sleeve them properly.

Sound's like a old school deal, speaking of old school id make sure they rebuild the entire head with new part's and then call the mayor and sheriff, and report someone just stoled one hell of a deal

I worked for month's on a reupholstry job, and finally at the last second found someone who saved me 2000.00 and did a stand up job, sometime's that just the way it work's.
