I picked this boat up last year, and now am having trouble with it not shifting into forward. I hve no manuals and don't know much about boat engines to begin with. I've read several forums on this site ,shifting seems to be a common problem. Also is there a differance between selective shifting and electric shift? How do I tell what i have? also someone mentioned in one of the forums about using type c gear lube, what will happen if I used the wrong lube?? would greatly apprieciate it if someone could help me out with these questions... thanks .. Are you saying the motor is in something other than forward gear when it is not running? That is caused by the piston being stuck in the oil pump and is caused by dirt or metal grit in the oil. The oil pump is the last item to come out of the gearcase and the first item to be put back in. In other words, it is quite a job for the inexperienced.

Disconnect both wires (green and blue) where they come up from the lower unit at the side of the powerhead. If it then goes into forward, your shift switch is probably bad.

Commander ;

thanks for your help. I did what you said with disconnecting the wires. The prop went forward. So now what can the shift switch be fixed or does it need to be replaced. Do they still make parts for something that old? or do they modify it some way, not sure if it's something i can fix on my own/also with your help, or do you suggest taking it in to a pro. But I still would like to thank you thus far.

thanks ....ese'

The shift switch must be replaced. They are hard to find and very expensive. You must have one for Hydro-Electric shift. The older electric shift ones look the same but are different inside.

Some people have installed a toggle switch, a practice I frown upon. Dangerous and can wreck the motor if accidently flipped at the wrong time.

It kind of sounds like you have the wrong switch. On my '69 Lark if there is no power going to the LU it's in neutral. If you do have the wrong switch we need to talk, I have a control box with the right switch for your motor.

Re: 1971 triumph evinrude 60hp

Careful, klicknative. It sounds like you are considering a swap. He says that he has neutral and reverse. On his, reverse requires voltage on both the green and blue wires at the same time. If you supply voltage to both green and blue at the same time on your 40 you will twist off the drive shaft or break a clutch spring.

No way I would put it on the boat without checking it out with an ohm meter first. I hoping he has a meter and can check it. The switch I have is open in FWD, blue and red connected in N, green and red in R.

Re: 1971 triumph evinrude 60hp

o.k here's what I found so far.
inside the sectronic switch box, under forward button two terminals no wires on them. under nuetral button two terminals, blue on one side going to lower unit area and puple on other going to ignition. under reverse button one terminal with a green wire going to lower unit area. I also have a spare set up that came with the boat pretty much looks the same except that there were white wires attached under forward terminal but everthing is unatached as far as where the wires are going ? also looks in pretty bad shape. The switch box looks like it's one assembly ? or can it be broken down? take forward button from one to the other, the spare one seems to hold down when pushed, but the reverse on the spare doesn't hold , or else i would consider swaping the units out , is there a way to test if the switches are bad at the terminals under the switch itself??

thanks again Ese'
