Where should I start looking? Starter motor kicks the motor over just fine - I'm just not getting any spark.

How would I test that the hall sensor (or whatever they use to time the spark), ignition block, etc. I have a fairly high-end multimeter, no special test equipment.

THanks in advance,

Matt

Start by unpluging the kill switch in the tiller handle, next the dead mans switch, if you still have no spark OHM test the stator

Thanks, but -

This is actually a '97, not an '87. It's also a remote control version, with starter, alternator, etc.

Laddies - You mention ohm testing the stator - what reading am I looking for?

Thanks,

Matt

It's a '97 9.9, serial # 06439458

It looks like there's a charging coil (goes to the rectifier), a hall sensor, and another coil which connects to the ignition module.

Your switch box should be 339-7452A**
Stator test
BLK/yellow to - ==3250 to 3650 ohms
BLK/white to - ==150 to 250m ohms
Trigger test
Brown/yellow to brown/white == 750 to1050 ohms
Brn/ yellow to - == open
Brn/ white to - == open

Re: '87 Mariner 9.9 no spark on either cyl.

Laddies,

it looks like the trigger coil is definitely bad - I get 10 Mega ohms, which climbs continually as I'm holding the test leads to it.

My stator MIGHT be okay - I get 3175ohms and 137ohms. The numbers you gave me call for 3250 and 150 minimum. Is this close enough, or do I need to replace it as well?

Finally, as long as I'm yanking the flywheel, what should my resistance be on the charge coil?

Thanks a million for your assistance on this,

Matt

Laddies,

I just wanted to let you know I kicked over the motor after replacing the trigger coil. I'm absolutely delighted.

Thanks a million for your assistance!!
