i just got a 93 225, removed the lower unit to replace water pump and the input shaft is loose where it fits thru the seal and bearing housing, it will move around 1/16 ths of an inch back and forth at the bottom and 3/8" at the top , i know this is a two part shaft and i would expect a little play in the splines but this seems excessive?
i removed the bearing housing and the play is where the shafts mate.
it seems like the upper drive shaft may have come from an older unit due to it's beat up condition, there is a nick in the shaft where someone has cut an impeller off of the shaft and pipewrench marks on the reduced part of the shaft where someone went medeval on it.
could this be a replacement unit with the old upper driveshaft in it?
also how can you tell if a lower unit is for a v4 or v6 by looking at it?
i have a chance to buy a 92 155 v6 lower unit. the guy selling it says it is the same but i am worried that it will not work on the bigger motor.
any help would be appreciated
