I just read a bunch of Q&A's using the search engine so I know I need to get a service manual but I want to go boating tomorrow.

I have a water pump replacement kit and I can't install it until I find what releases the shift rod linkage. Years ago I remember there was a coupling visible once the lower unit bolts were removed and it dropped down a little. The model is J40TEERE. I'm guessing it is somewhere under the cowling. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Lower Unit Removal 1994 Johnson

Well, I kept looking at old posts and I learned the shift rod connection was behind and underneath the lower carb. I had to take off the starter to get at the bolt.

I'm brand new at this site and I was wondering why nobody posted a reply since last night.

I have another question too. I discovered I can't tilt the engine up. There is a lever that gets pushed aft to manually raise the engine and gets pushed forward to lock it into a position (up, down or in between). I'm thinking I should start a new post for this new problem but am wondering if I'll get an answer

So did you get your shift rod disconnected? You have to disconnect it from the bellcrank, which by the way is much more difficult to put back together. Make sure you disconnect your battery and drain your lube and remove prop b4 doing this. As far as not being able to raise your motor, im not understanding what you mean, you cant activate the trail locks? Sometimes you have to be patient with an answer, it's not like the experts on here get paid to do this or anything, out of there own time, hope this helps, gl

Yup, I'm all set with the water pump change out. I also changed the lower unit oil and greased the prop shaft. Thanks for the reply

Sorry I was impatient. I belong to an electricians forumn and I am used to questions getting several responses an hour. I'll be more patient in the future

Don't know what it's called but there is a lever on the starbord side about three inches long. It is mounted high up on the engine mounting bracket just above the transome height. To tilt the engine for you must push the lever aft and to lock the engine into position the lever must be pulled forward. I can't get the engine to tilt up at all. The lever is connected to a small tube that connects to a piston that dampens the movement of the tilt. I'm assuming the lever allows hydraulic fluid to flow allowing the motor to tilt up or down in a controlled (slow) manner

That lever is connected to the tilt cylinder by a small steel cable with "plastic" ends. My bet is one of the plastic ends broke. Common, common problem in a poor design IMHO>
