Opinions on Tohatsu Outboards

I just got a Tracker Grizzly 1648 long transom and am currently looking for a 9.8/9.9HP 4-stroke outboard. Could someone offer an objective opinion about Tohatsu in this size motor? As far as new motors go, the prices seem to be very good in comparison to the other big names, but that difference in price of course makes me wonder why that is? What makes them 10-15% lower in price?

Also, perusing the forum I noticed someone say that Tohatsu makes the Mercury 8HP. I'm curious, do they make Mercury's 9.9? What other brands does Tohatsu build motors for?

I know 2 years ago when I was looking at 6 to 9.9hp engines for my 12' that Tohatsu made ALL the 4 stroke mercury engines up to 9.9hp. Nissan is the same engine also.

All of the Mercury's, from 30 hp and down in the U.S., are Tohatsu's. They don't cost the dealer any less than any other brand. But, the price competition is a lot stiffer on the 18 and below because they are the only brand that is allowed to be shipped by the manufacturer. The 25 and up are priced the same or higher than other brands. Quality wise there is no difference from brand to brand. Compare price, features, warranty and your local dealer, from brand to brand in your area. Tohatsu may provide the best value...Or it may not.

I'm going to say that Tohatsu engines are crap with lousy dealer service--Just to get under Tohatsuguru's skin. This seems to be a really sore point with him. And hey! when you know someone's weak point, you pick on it.

Just funnin' you Guru! I have no opinion on the engines either way.
