Hi all-

1999 3cyl 40elpto here...
Just wondering if the limit on my trim while underway is a mechanical or electrical limit switch? I would like to defeat it if possible. My transom has about 10 degrees negative rake from vertical, so the merc limit only gives me about 10 more degrees of trim up... anything over 2k rpm and she drops back down to a certain limit. Any way to defeat this limiter? We had a 2001 2 cyl 40elpto that didn't care how high I trimmed it on the same boat...

Thanks for your time!

It's built into the hydraulics. I'm afraid it's there quite intentionally. For controlability, to keep the swivel bracket between the guides for strength, to keep the water intakes in the water, and to keep the fuel system at an operable angle.

Willy-

So my only option is to change the angle of mounting to the transom? Is there a relief valve within the trim assembly? My old 40 would trim till it was propping air all day. Not sure why, but it did... I need about 5 degrees more... It seems to be RPM related. The manual even states that the magic # is 2K . That makes me think its a switch related to the RPM...

Thanks again for your time!

you could purchase reversable transom wedges that would give you 5 degrees more trim out .make sure you get the correct ones as they come for tucking the motor in or for tucking out .it sounds like you want out.

Sure...

Nothin' fancy. Just my old fishing boat. 1988 Tracker. After looking at my manual, it looks like my only hope besides the wedges would be a heavier spring for the relief valve... The t/t unit seems to be shared with the higher hp engines, up to about 125 or so.

My 1995 90hp Mercury has the same issue.....did you find a way to get the angle higher? Where can I find these wedges for the transom?
