hello people.i just bought my first boat and its becoming a major project(an 87 bayliner trophy with a 125 force):(. Is there any one out there that can tell me where i can get a new (or used)thermostat cover for my 87 125 force? I accidentaly cracked it trying to remove the frozen bolts that held it on. ebay is no help. I have the original part number but i havent been able to find an aftermarket supplier that even lists it.any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

How did you end up getting the screws out?

Re: thermostat cover

I just did this myself to check the thermostat on my 125Force, the best tool you can use on an outboard, is a small impact driver! 3 screws came out without it, but the last one (of course) was a b***h, never would have got it out without the driver.

Re: thermostat cover

My Uncle showed me how to stop breaking bolt heads ;) I'm finally catching on to this kind of stuff.

Use heat before impact. Get it nice and hot first and it makes it much easier.

Re: thermostat cover

First i tried heat but I was afraid of burning the head gaskets or at the least warping it. Then I kept hitting the tops of the bolts with a hammer to keep the slots tight and thats when I accidentaly hit the housing and crcked it. At this point I figuered I could get a better grip with vise grips if I broke it completely off. Well I got one off and the other snapped in the head. I just have to drill and retap the other.(The two on the top came out with the screwdriver and little effort, the two bottom were frozen).JUST A LITTLE ADVICE AN IMPACT DRIVER CAN BE A LITTLE DANGEROUS- TOO MUCH IMPACT WITH THE HAMMER CAN BEND/WARP THE CYLINDER HEAD COVER). Its very thin and ofcourse it happend to me.DOH

Yeah, you gotta go easy with the driver, not manhandle it.
