Ignition Bogging Down

I have a 1982 40hp two stroke engine. When engaging switch to turn motor over, it acts like the battery is low. It barely turns over and then will suddenly turn over normally. It seems to worsen if I have trouble with the engine firing and continue to try and start it. The process repeats itself each time I start the engine. It runs fine once started. My mechanic had replaced the switchbox with a used switchbox because I was not getting fire. Could this be the source of the problem? The battery is not low and the wires to the motor from battery have been replaced.

Im not 100 percent sure but it sounds like your starter might be ready to go. I would wait and see what some one else has to say.

Frank, when you say that the battery is not low what do you mean? Are talking about the voltage reading being over 12v or that you had it load tested and it supplies its rated cranking amperage? A battery can show full voltage and still be bad. If you haven't already done so, take the battery down to your local auto parts store and have it fully tested. They usually test them for free and this will quickly narrow down the problem. If the battery tests good it is time to look at the starter, It could be on its way out. Check the battery first, it's the cheaper of the two and much easier to fix. The reason why it gets worse when the engine starts to fire is now you have the fuel igniting in the cylinders and working against the starter. This is normal.

Also, make sure all your battery cable connections are tight and free of corrosion. Tight at the battery, starter solenoid and starter.
