10 hp carb rebuild, now I'm confused

After deciding to rebuild my carb in the process of fixing my HS adjustment needle problem I'm looking through the rebuild kit and getting confused.

Which is suppose to be the packing? I thought it was the thick rubber washer at first glance however there is only one. Which is fine if I just do the HS needle but what is suppose to be the packing for the slow speed needle? There are two O-rings in the kit, but from my other thread (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=212179)I thought the packing was to be something other than just an O-ring.

The packings are usually made of gasket material, though sometimes they are a soft plastic material. There should be at least 4 of them in the kit because they use at least 2 on each needle. There should also be some thin nylon washers to go between the packings and packing nut. Did you get a OEM kit or generic? We need to be aware of these problems.

On disassembly I figured out the thick rubber washer (pick up nozzel to fuel bowl seal)

The kit is a generic one from NAPA.

I've got everything thats needed from the picture figured out except for the packing.

As seen there are 6 fiber packing, 2 O-rings, and NO nylon washers. Should I ignore the O-rings? Just use 2 each of the fiber washers and ignore the nylons? Use 3 fiber to make up for the lack of the nylons?

This answered itself on reassembly, the O-rings were to big to fit right in the hole. I just used 2 of the fiber and called it good. If this doesn't sound right its not to much to go back and redo.

Word of warning to anyone else the float pin in this kit (part# 18-7043) was just a tad long and I had to grind it down a bit to get the floatbowl half of the carb to sit all the way down on the main body.

All in all its good that I decided to rebuild since even though it wasn't bad crud wise and the motor ran/idled well the low speed needle passage was almost plugged w/crud.

Thanks for the help FR and Thanks again to those from the other thread.

I believe the 6 packings are what you are looking for. Put two on each needle. Not all years used the nylon backups anyway. I don't know what the heck the o-rings are for.

What are the metal discs with the star-shaped cutouts?
I know the solid metal discs are for the calibration pockets...

I didn't use them but figured they were for the linkages in place of clips.

Got her back together, running and from what I can tell I have my self adjusting HS needle problem fixed.:D It idles good at the start mark and decently at the shift mark but after about 60 secs it starts to hiccup and gets ruff. With out quick blip of the throttle to clear it up it will sputter and cough until it dies and is hard to start. I know 2 strokes aren't known for low idle, but how long should I expect it idle at absolutely no throttle and stay running?

FWIW as it is now I'm actually happy w/ it as I don't do any real trolling or running down below the start mark but just curious as to what I should expect from it.

Sounds to me like you might have a very slight vacuum leak that might cause that idle problem. I like to use a propane torch with the little camper's 2dollar tanks to turn on (unlit of course) and hold it around all the gasket openings. If it smooths out, you got yourself a leak. I've used this method a couple of times successfully. If you need a gasket, save yourself the mail time and go to the nearest autoparts store and get some felpro gasket material. I like the 1/16 inch thick stuff myself. There's a recent post about this somewhere on the forum. I learned both these tricks here on iboats-- there's some real experts here. hope you get 'er running absolutely perfectly-- this trick got me over the hump on a '57 18 hp johnson and a '53 10 hp johnson. you can't tell 'em from new now.
good luck-- jbj
