I recently started to undertake repairs on the steering mechanism on my motor. The steering cable ram is stuck in the tilt tube and will not budge. I have started trying to pull the tilt tube with the steering cable still stuck in it. I had to pick pull the motor off of the stern and pick it up with an engine puller. Tube is approximately 1/2 the way out but is very hard to move. I am contemplating beating the tube out and if it gets tore up replacing it and the steering mechanism. Does anyone have any different suggestions.

That is the usual scenario. Beat on it. Not sure of that year, but it probably has some plastic bushings that will be destroyed if you heat it. Don't let it happen again. Next time perform the required preventative maintenance and keep it clean and lubed.

i just went through the same thing, replaced my steering cables. check to see if the tilt tube is threaded as mine was. i just turned twords the motor until the cable freely came out, no beating needed.
