Alpha outdrive failed need help

Yesterday I was out on my Donzi 22zx and while driving down a canal I felt the outdrive strike something underwater but still ran fine then I got out of the canal and got on plane, as soon as I was on plane I heard a grinding, clanking noise and lost drive power the engine sill ran but sounded like something disconnected from the outdrive, and was banging around. Any idea where to start?

I hate to be the one to tell you, but it sounds like you lost the outdrive, more then likely you snapped the main shaft or broke the splines, the only way to be sure is to tear it down, you said you lost complete power to the outdrive, that does not sound like a spun prop, with a spun prop, you should be able to motor back to the dock, just very low speed

The first things I would do is pull the outdrive and check the universal joints.
Second is drain the gear lube and check for metal.
After those 2 checks you will know where the problem is.

No motoring for me just a tow from the local sheriff dept. The prop looks fine also.

well if the prop looks fine, you might not have hit anything, just broke it, follow DonS advice on what to check and order, the same thing happened to me with my merc 120, it ended up being the main shaft spline broke off

Yeah it sounded like something was banging around when I started the engine again. If I drain the lube first and do not see any metal, is it safe to assume it is in the shaft area? I'm not a mechanic but I am pretty mechanical. Is there anywhere to get a good schematic of the outdrive or a manual I could get?

I purchased my manual for my boat from iboats, very good, has all info needed, good luck
