I was going to remove my lower unit from my 1976 SeaRay with a 233 hp Mercruiser for inspection today and can not get the prop off. Is there a trick to getting it to move once the nut, etc. has been removed?

Can the lower unit be removed with the upper unit staying attached?

Re: Prop Removal

the lower unit can be removed with the upper still attached to the boat. I have had props stick to the shaft. I have in the past used a block of wood on the back side of the prop. Hold it to the prop and tap with a hammer. Just tap. Turn the prop and tap all three blades one at a time. It should come loose.

Re: Prop Removal

some times they are really on there. As often as I ding up a prop. (river running) I never have one on long enough to worry about it, but I have had to do it before.

Re: Prop Removal

When was the last time you had the prop off and lubricated it with spline grease?

It could be on there so hard that nothing short of destroying the prop and using a puller on the hub that is left.

The lesson here is take off your prop and lubricate it annually.
