Some advice needed

Hi,
First of all let me declare that i am new to using outboard motors etc.

I have 1991 6hp Evinrude that is used on 1991 Quicksilver QS 330 inflatable. The engine is newly serviced. On full throttle with 2 people (160kg) in good weather conditions, I get a speed of 10kmph. Is this what i should expect or should go it be going faster. Also the motor emits a lot smoke from the exhuast, atleast enough so i can see it collecting around the transom irrespective of wind direction. Lastly when i change gears it gives a strong jerk is this normal. As for the fuel consumption in fair weather with 2 people it on 70% throttle it consumes 10liters in 3.5hrs, is this resonable.

Any help on understanding these issues would be much appreciated.

thanks

Fuel consumption is about right.

Rule of thumb is (all thumbs are not the same) 10% x horsepower will equal hourly consumption in gallons at wide open throttle. In your case that would be .10 x 6 = .6 gallons per hour at WOT. Multiply that by 3.5 hrs and you get 2.1 gallons. Now, if you're truly operating at 70% of full throttle, it would seem that 10 liters (2.6 gal.) would be high.

Speed would seem about OK. If the motor is newer than 1963, the mix ratio should be 50:1, gas to TC-W3 outboard oil.

Many thanks to all you guys for your feedback. I will take a look at the idle setting.

By the way there is small knob in front of the tiller arm that when i twist it seems to tighten or loosen up the throtle. What exactly is it? and what's it purpose?

Once again many thanks.
