Hey Laddies,
I saw your post on the "old motor speeds" thread.
how about some pics of your old mercs in action? Those mercs are putting out some pretty big #'s! Obviously you are a merc expert. What are some of the modifications you have to make to get them to do this and are they possible on 70's and 80's mercs? By the way, thanks for your efforts on my 9.8. ---still haven't gotten it solved all the way but i'm making progress.
yes, i'm pretty much an OMC man but like to see or own a nice old outboard of any brand in good running condition.
thanks again,
jbj

Re: Hey, Laddies

I dont have many old pictures because most of our stuff was captured on video. I took a few pictures out of the 1982 Marathon Nationals flyer and also scanned a few of my old pictures. The first picture is my friend Don Hagerl who is a many time A stock runabout national champion. Do not forget that all of the engines in these pictures are bone stock and go thru and inspection every time they win a race.

The next picture is my son Matt during his rookie year also in an A stock runabout rig.

The next picture is another picture of Don Hagerl. It also lists the class specs.

The next picture is my son Nick at the short course nationals in 1992 racing in the D stock runabout class. These boats run around 70mph.

The last picture in my 2 sons Matt and Nick racing for first place in the 1989 marathon nationals in the D stock runabout class. This was Nicks rookie season and Matt earned his first national title that year. The neat thing about this picture is that they are so close together after 25 miles of racing and about 20 miles left of racing.

Great old pix Bob...that D140 is ONE gorgeous little rocket! And the pix of the kids is just too much.. Reminds me of watching my older brother back in the 60's
Can I copy and post those pix in my Yahoo "oldfastboats" group pictures? That site/group of mine I started is mostly just old pix..and yours are top notch!

Scaaty....its ok with me if you use the pictures. Thanks for the compliment on the 140 m boat...I built that boat for my son Nick in 1991 and I have built 4 other boats and three of them have won national titles.

Re: Hey, Laddies

Hey Laddies,
If you ever come across a 1960s era runabout with the name "Smith-Built" or the numbers 12-P, 12-N, 112-N or 222-N on it, let me know! My Dad, Riggs, built a couple dozen hulls back in the day when he was racing and I would love to track one down! The only one we know the whereabouts of is presently about 1-inch thick and rotting under a concrete block wall that toppled over on top of it about 30 years ago. The guy my Dad sold it to had it stored in an old barn that collapsed on top of it...
