I dont know much about this motor. I bought it in 1978 from a small engine repair shop. The old man that owned the shop owned the motor and said it was a good motor and run good. He's dead now. Its a Otasco 5hp 1 cylinder two stroke. I think the motor may be a B & S. I took it out one time and it ran for about 10 minutes and went dead. I put it in the shed and its been there ever since. I just took it out today (over 29 years later). I have not cleaned it up or nothing. Just leaned it up against the fence and took some pics. It will turn over. Gas tank is build on it. Seems to be in good condition. Any idea of year? Reckon I can get this old motor running? What to do?

Nobody knows much about that outboard. It's unlikely to be Briggs & Stratton. More likely, it's Clinton or Eska-based. It's probably air-cooled, with an impeller providing cooling water to the exhaust, like most of these small outboards.

Can you take the hood off and see if there are any tags on the engine? Also, take photos of the exposed engine. Someone will be able to identify it from those, I'm guessing.

These store-brand motors are almost all Clinton or Eska. Eskas use Tecumseh engines, which almost always have a metal tag on them somewhere.

Parts? Well...you can get some parts. Carburetors are pretty standard on these air-cooled engines, and small engine repair people can supply kits, if you take the carb in to them.

Give us every number you can find, inside and out, on your oddball outboard, and we'll try to help.

I've moved it inside and put it on a motor stand. There is a metal tag screwed on one side that says: T-643-05 6018637. I will clean it up later and get pics.... TY

That'll be great. I really like figuring out mystery outboards. Note that a search for Otasco here brings up three old threads, so maybe there's useful info in those, too. From what I understand, Otasco was a tire store in Oklahoma. For a while they sold outboards, kinda like Firestone did.

I have one of these motors and haven't been able to find any parts yet. I need a crank shaft and conecting rod. I blew the rod in to about 8 pieces. Was running it with no load and just about the time I got the carb tuned right it blew { you know what they say in NASCAR,,,It ran its best just before it blew up }. I would like to fix it if I can find the parts. I'm in Fayetteville Arkansas and my e-mail is terryboyd@mail.com.....Get in touch with me and maybe we can do some trading or I might be willing to buy your motor. By the way it has a Tecumseh power head on it and I tried to get in touch with the factory but haven't heard anything back yet. Go ahead and e-mail me and we will see what happens...ANIMAL
