Pathfinder as tow vehicle

Thinking of purchasing a 2002 Stingray180. My C-RV won't do the trick as far as towing, it looks like a Pathfinder will (5000# rating)
Anybody have any good or bad issues with towing using a Pathfinder?
Probably about 20 times a year, 100 miles round trip.

Thanks

Re: Pathfinder as tow vehicle

I tow with an '02 Xterra rated at 5,000 pounds (if memory serves me correctly - might be 5,400 actually) and I find it very capable towing my 3,000 pound rig. I wouldn't hesitate to tow more but I'm sure others will recommend that you not exceed 75% of the tow rating, or 3,750 pounds. Obviously Nissan is comfortable with the full 5,000 pounds and they're the folks who not only know the vehicle and it's capabilities best but also the people who provide the warranty coverage if it breaks. I'm sure their tow rating already has some margin of safety built into it. If the boat exceeds 1,500 pounds they recommend trailer brakes and this is required in most states - but I don't have them on my rig and I have no worries given it's performance without them.

Before you buy have a look at the Xterra. It's a bit more utilitarian than the Pathy but still a very sound performer both on and off road. In fact, it's probably better offroad than the Pathy is - not that this really matters to 98% of buyers. The upside is the price. The Pathy is definitely more plush but otherwise they're very similar and the Xterra can be had at a much lower cost.

Before you buy anything see if the dealers will let you take the truck and the boat for a day. The boat dealer may not like this arrangement but most auto dealerships who know you're a serious buyer will allow it. Tow the rig around with the truck and judge for yourself. There's no better way to make an informed decision than this.

No problem, if you are talking an '05 or newer. The prior model was a uni-body vs the current with ladder frame. The Pathfinder is rated at 6000lb towing with all the normal disclaimers (deductions for cabin weight, etc). I call it a "solid" 5K. I have an '05 which I tow my 2050 w/V8. Trailer Boats mag did some reviews on it, back in '05, including a seperate write-up and also comparing to a bunch of V8 mid-size SUVs. Check, might still be online. 27K miles, and no issues yet. It does have a truck like ride vs a soft soccer mom suv. :) If you have any other specific questions, please ask.

Re: Pathfinder as tow vehicle

I just pulled my 182BR Crownline (boat and trailer weigh 3,750 lbs +/-) just over 1400 miles roundtrip from Virginia through the mountains of Pennsylvania to the St. Lawrence River with an Xterra with auto transmission ..... Xterra did a great job.. sufficient HP and the gearing is excellent for towing..... got just over 16 mpg driving the speed limit or just above..

Trailer has disc brakes which I installed this spring ..... major improvement over the drums that came on the trailer....

Bought the Xterra as a tow vehicle and it exceeds my expectations....

My 95 pathy (Real Pathy) pulls my boat no problem; if you have an automatic an aftermarket trannie cooler would be a good investment. on steep grades I can only maintain 55 mph pulling 5000lbs; but 55 pulling an extra 5 k is fast enough as stopping is important(I run 33" tires and a lift which also slows me a bit; but I can drive over the X's when they get stuck;)
225,000 miles and pulling.

Not so fast - my Xterra runs the equivalent of 33s stock so I don't need the mods you've had to add to your Pathy. Just remember, the Pathy is nice, but the not-so-little brother Xterra is not only tougher but also better looking ; )

Sibling rivalry - we fight amongst ourselves until the non-Nissan outsiders jump in the fray right?

No doubt - they're great vehicles. I was reading that the new Pathy will come with the same v-8 you can get in the Armada and the Titan. I don't see the point in that but it's interesting just the same. If money were no object...
