Yamaha 250 Trim & Tilt Problem...

I have a 96 yamaha 250, My Tilt Trim Motor made a real bad sound (grinding) on the way up. After that All I could get was a loud click when pressing the button. I took off the whole unit, taking the opportunity to replace a leaky cylinder cap. The Motor was really corroded, the rest of the tilt trim is fine. I installed a new motor, filled with fluid & still only a loud click, It seems to be coming from under there black plastic panel where I wired It in or maybe from the gray fuse cover above It. Any help? advice? Thanks

Hi Rodbolt, yes I do have a multimeter. I don't know if this will pertain, I looked under the gray fuse cover. The cylinder fuse in the water tight holder is fine. The other large square fuse has a smaller square fuse that seems very loose, will just fall out if I pull the large one out. Thanks for replying.

Re: Yamaha 250 Trim & Tilt Problem...

ok, several checks, if your meter is digital dont sweat polarity if its analog you will need to.
locate the trim relay. on the relay you will have a 10Ga black,10Ga blue,10ga red and a 10ga green
negative will go to black and positive to red. toggle the trim up or down and observe voltage under a load. anything below 10 V and you will need to check grounds and supply.
if the first test passses then place the red meter lead on the blue 10Ga and the black one on the green. toggle trim up and you should read 12 Volts,if your meter is digital toggle trim down and you should now read -12 Volts.
be aware that in the at rest position the relay motor terminals are grounded.
another quick test if test 1 passsed is to simply remove both 10Ga green and blue wires, touch the green to black and the blue to red. motor should run up provided 12 volts is avalible and the trim motor is operational. reverse the leads and it should go down.
as you stated the relay clicks then the control circuits are functioning.
its a very simple system and if you search my posts I have posted a more complete test for yamaha trim and tilt circuits.

I'm going to go check that. The motor has 4 leads, no red, not on the original or replacement. There are the green & blue, a black with an eyelit connector & a black with a slide together connector. The eyelit black wire seems to go to a bolt on the frame. I will assume the slide on wire would be the red. I did install exactly as the onld one came out. thanks again for responding.

Ok, Sorry about that last post. You said the relay & I was thinking of the leads comming off the motor. When I touch the black & red I get 12.4 volts, when I hit the toggle it goes to 12.3 volts.
When I put the red lead on the blue & the black on the green I get nothing, no change when I hit the toggle.
When i touch the green to the black & the blue to the red the motor starts right up.
As You stated the 2nd test should have shown 12 volts. Where to from here? Thanks again.

Re: Yamaha 250 Trim & Tilt Problem...

sounds like the relay has failed internally.
unplug the the connector for the solinoid control. make sure the solinoid ground is intact. apply 12 volts to the 18Ga blue and then green wires. if the solinoid clicks and has voltage and the trim motor still does not work, odds are high the relay failed internally.
you have already proven the motor is capeable of working.
troubleshooting is very simple if you break it up, you tested the motor, you tested the motor side of the solinoid, now have a look at the solinoid control circuits.

Well, I disconnected the red & blue, when touched nothing happened, when I hit the toggle, heard the same click. When I touched red & green the motor started without hitting the toggle. Guess I'll be changing the relay in the AM (if It's in stock) Thanks
