Mercury manuals

Is their any difference between aftermarket repair manuals from say clymer
and the true factory manuals from Mercury.

I don't want to be cheap but the mercury manual is 3 times as much.

Are either the after market manuals or the mercury manuals easy to follow for an inexperianced repair person such as me.

The Mercury manuals are more accurate and have more specific details. THe aftermarket manuals are more generic and leave out a lot of the information that you will need.

Incidentally, don't buy any "manuals" on CD from Ebay. Most if not all sellers claim to have CDs full of manuals for all motors in some range, but what they are really selling is a scanned copy of a generic Clymer book. Essentially a digital photocopy. Sleazy, if not outright illegal.

That said, Ebay can still be a good place to look, just make sure you are buying a printed Mercury book. I've lucked out and found a "parts manual" for my old 1500 for something like $10.

The Clymer type books are better than nothing, if they are all that you can find. I don't know that they are any more friendly to beginners, though, and mine could certainly use some editing, as some of the instructions are hard to follow. YMMV.

I ended up with one of those Clymer reruns on CD once on Ebay. I also got a legitimate Mercury manual that a guy copied .pdf on CD and and happy. It cost around $10/00

I am interested in buying Mercury manuals for a 2002 50HP 4 stroke bigfoot and for a 80HP 1982 with thunderbot ignition. Can these be bought direct from Mercury, if so how do I contact them? I have a Seloc and also a Clymer for a 80 HP and 35 HP and not happy with those.

Buy a Factory mag, and when you are done (I ALWAYS sell a motor with a Fac mag if possible..)...pass it on with the owner, or sell it for what ya bought it for on C/L

does anyone know if you can you order mariner 1980-1990 service manuals off that link cause I think yamaha were making some of those models? if not where would I find one?

I bought a Clymer manual for a 60hp and like he said they are sketchy and talk about every engine except the one you are working on. Too much information not related to your motor.
Like someone said on here " Clymer is to put under the lower unit when you change the oil and Seloc is to kneel on so you don't get your knees dirty"

I got some info from my manual but if I had it to do again I'd buy a mercury manual.....................Jerry
