Hello,
I had my boat out over the weekend. I was running it pretty hard for about three hours. Suddenly the steering gave way and all it did was make a poping noise. It sounded like it was coming from a silver box right behind the steering wheel. I can't seem to find the name of this part. Is it the helm?? The steering works at idle speed or out of the water and this is the only time. Did I shear some gear teeth off within that box?

If your '76 'tron is like my 2, it has an old Morse rack and pinion system. I replaced it on both mine. I used the Teleflex "The Rack" on my 16' T-166 outboard and a no-feeback "NFB The Rack' on my 19' V-195 Sterndrive (no power steering). Highly recommend the Teleflex units. There are also rotary units, but i haven't seen them on a tron before.

Just pick the length of the old cable. My original steering wheel fit just fine.

"The Rack" standard: http://www.iboats.com/Backmount_The...94405802--list_time.1187027718--view_id.40290

"NFB Rack"

Yep, you have lost teeth off your rack. Replacement time.

I got it fixed. This is the first time I have had a boat. Sometime I just don't relize the ease some things can be to fix. The four bolts conecting the pinon gear to the rack were loose. Two were loose enough that they could be turned by hand. I have only had the boat on the water two times and just never ran into the problem before. The gears were just slipping. I put everything back together with all of the bolts tight and it fixed the problem. Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks for this post... This is the unit that the dealer wants to charge me $1000 for.
