Hello. I am the proud owner of a 1963 Evinrude Starflite 75 hp #75383-E. This old motor ran well when I first bought it about 8 years ago. With my boat (1969 tri-hull), I was able to go 39 mph. Over the years, the motor seemed to be putting out less and less power. Now, I can't even get on plane. I've repaired or replaced "everything", short of a powerhead rebuild over the last few years with little results. My compression is 75, 75, 75, 65. Oil squirted into the cylinders raises the compression by about 20 psi. I believe this can be attributed to bad rings. Therefore, I have decided to rebuild the motor from the top to the lower unit.
I have decent mechanical abilities, so I am not worried about getting in over my head, especially with the great repair community here at this site. I have a Seloc, Clymer and a copy of an official 1964 Starflite shop manual. I was wondering if there are any pitfalls to watch out for, especially those that the manuals may not talk about. I would imagine that there are some pitfalls that only experience would expose.
Also, I would like to build a motor stand. I am thinking of building something out of lumber from Lowe's. Has anybody built their own stand?
Thanks

Use the factory shop manual and correct sealers and torque settings and you should have no trouble. Troubles come when somebody knows more than the engineers that built the motor. Like not using an accurate torque wrench to tighten rod bolts. BTW, I always use new rod bolts. Ever since one exploded in the test tank 2 minutes after I started it the first time after rebuild.

Lots of people here have built stands. Best advice is build it twice as strong and stable as you think you need. You are going to be horsing around on the motor and working on it in tilted position as well as normal.

You might want to make an inventory of the seals, gaskets, rings, rod bolts etc. that are going to be replaced and make sure you can obtain everything prior to disassembly. You'll also know beforehand what the cost is going to be and you can consider that compared the cost of a newer motor. Explore your options before diving in. Who knows, you might make money parting it out....to someone like me.

Yes. I will certainly make an inventory of needed parts and look into the availability and price. I will price the rod bolts. Does anybody know of any other parts that should be replaced that are not specifically mentioned in the manuals (of course gaskets and such are mentioned)?
Also, on an administrative note, if I have a question regarding this rebuild, should I post the question as a reply to this thread or should I start a new thread?
