Hello everybody, I just purchased a 1978 35hp Evinrude and decided to build a boat around it. Love the SeaFlea MinyMost XL { google it }. My first question is what is this motor worth { supose its in exelent shape,,,which it is }, I keep telling my girlfriend its an investment and she just frowns,,,LOL. I got it out of a barn for 50 bucks and its clean as a whistle under the hood. The problem is they used bolt cutters and a cutting torch to get it out of the boat which went to fill a pond { gosh,,,I hope its not stolen }. It came from my girlfriends sons boss,,,so if it comes back stolen I know who to casterate. Any how my first question is where do all the wires go? I know the big red and black ones go to the battery { degree in automechnics,,,yuk,,yuk }. What I have left is { all small wires } red, black, black-w-yellow stripe, yellow-w-red stripe, purple-w-white stripe. The motor has electric start and electric choke { which I don't care about,,,has manual choke on front of motor }. Got to know what wires go to what before I can even start it in a barrel, if it will start. Ok next question. I have an OTASCO { Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company,,,for you young'ens } which has a Tecumseh 5hp 2 stroke power head on it. Its direct drive { no gears } and air cooled. Was going to use it for a fishing motor { girlfriends boy goes } untill I shattered the conecting rod into about 8 pieces. The piston and block are still good but the crank and rod are history { you know what they say in NASCAR,,it runs the best just before it blows,,,LOL }. Any body got any parts new or used? had the numbers off of it but now I can't find them [durn gremlins,,,don't have kids so can't blame them }. Any all the help I can get {mental and otherwise },,,,ANIMAL

Re: New With Lots of Questions

welcome to the forum!

The red wire provides 12V to the keyswitch Terminal "B"
The yellow/red mates up with red/purple coming back in from the keyswitch. Terminal "S" to energize the starter solenoid.
The purple/white actuates the electric choke, Terminal "C" on the keyswitch.
The black is engine block ground, Terminal "M" on the keyswitch.
The black/yellow is the kill circuit, other Terminal "M", shuts the engine off when connected to ground.

Get yourself some champion QL77JC4 spark plugs gapped at .030 and 2 carb kits (few bucks apiece on iboats) and a water pump kit, and a factory shop manual from kencook.com or marineengine.com

no, strike that, first get her to turn over for a compression test - I'd just jump the solenoid for that. No point throwing parts at a motor with bad compression. If that checks out, git 'r' done!!

Re: New With Lots of Questions

Thank you for getting right back to me. So I guess if it has a ground wire to kill it, it must not need a hot wire to the points and coils. Now to the OTASCO motor. I've tried to get ahold of Tecumseh with no luck so if anyone has any parts or pieces to this motor please let me know. Its a 5hp 2 stroke air cooled motor. I guess if I can't find parts I'll try to adapt a different power head to it. Might try a 3hp briggs lawn mower motor....ANIMAL:D

New question about the Evinrude. If I run an automotive electric fuel pump can I run it through the factory pump or will I have to bypass it? And if I bypass the factory pump should I remove it and plug the vacum hole?...ANIMAL:D

If you not going to use the electrical, simply remove all the wires if they are cut,or if they are into a plug, leve it alone,as for the kill circut,no battery is needed.the engine supplies its own ignition via a magneto under the flywheel, you can take a kill button and install it on the engine somewhere(if it dont have one, often there are plugged holes on front of engine for that purpose)then run one wire from button to a ground on the engine, any bolt on the block will do,then run the other to the blk/yel,that will give you a grounding button for kill.

Re: New With Lots of Questions

I plan to run all the wires up to a dash board and use togle switches and push buttens. Won't need a key switch, I'm putting a removeable steering wheel like the stock cars on it. When I don't want anyone to drive it I'll just take the wheel. I still need to know about the fuel pump.I want to run an automotive type electric fuel pump { about 7 psi } instead of the stock pump. You know, flip a switch and its self primeing and provides constant pressure, easyer to change when bad and cheaper. Just need to know what to do with the old stock pump. Do I run it through the pump or should I bypass it, and if I bypass it should I remove it { the stock pump }.Its my understanding that the stock pump works off crankcase vacum so if it goes bad would it cause a vacum leak? Thanks for all the help { I tend to do things the hard way and always look for the cheapest way to do it,,,only got 50 bucks a month to play with }....ANIMAL :D
