I have a '79 Johnson 115 that has a water leak that appears at the lower right side of the exhaust cover.
Can this be coming from the exhaust cover or is it more serious than that?

Re: Cooling leak

Not being experienced in this area, will I be able to rule out "or worse" by removing the exhaust cover?

I assume anything more than cover gaskets involves the engine case.

If you pick up the exhaust cover gaskets and remove the cover, you should be able to rule out other possibilities. It is not uncommon for the gaskets to fail, especially after an overheat.

Re: Cooling leak

Thank You,
That is somewhat comforting.

Is there engine cooling water passing through this part of the exhaust area?

Re: Cooling leak

Thank You,

I will try re-sealing the exhaust cover. However all the online part sellers only seem to sell only the complete sets.
I will try the local folks.
If that doesn't fix the leak, what would be next?

Re: Cooling leak

I believe it is a "flat head" since the cover is flat.

I think it is part #18-2866.

Thank You
