I have inherited a 1975 17' marquis with a mercruiser 120 sterndrive,the boat was put away about 5 years ago and has not moved since.it was running when it was put away and was winterized.i have changed oil fluids plugs,cap.plus got a new battery.when i turn over key all i get is a click,i think it is the starter.or the motor has locked up i dont know much about boats so am kindqa flying blind but tis was my granddads boat and i would love fix it.is there a way to find out if the motor is locked up,does anyone know anything about the marquis.i really need help

Try removing the spark plugs and see if you can turn the engine with a socket.

Then check all the battery cables. Put a volt meter or test light on the actual starter A+ connection and see if you are actually getting 12v to the starter when you turn the key. (in fact....do that first!)

Welcome to iboats.....
Since the 120 doen't have a bolt on the harmonic balancer you will just have to try to manhandle it or try to spin it with the altrenator pulley bolt.....
Pull the plugs as suggested, & sqirt a little motor oil in the cylinders or spray some Kroil or PB blaster, not WD 40.....
At this point try the starter again, after cleaning all of the battery connections.....​

i can spin the pully on the top,and i can spin alt pully by hand but cant get to pully on bottom b/c of motor mount went to try to to it of and motor started to drop down what do i do

One other thing to consider after sitting for so long, is that the drive may possibly be locked up....
The raw water impeller will also likely be bad.....
You may want to (should) pull the drive & changing the impeller & grease the ujoints......
This will also make it easier to spin the engine, while it is off.....
You can run the engine with the drive off as long as you supply cooling water to the inlet (approx 1 & 1/4 " dia.)on the bell housing.....
If the starter is still 'no go'

About 5 topics down there is a post on how to trouble shoot the starting system, for some reason, I can't link it.......

Is there a belt installed on the engine?....
Someone may have loosened the mount to replace it.....

yes there is a belt.there is a motor mount on the front of the motor that covers the three pully it has four bolts that go through the mount and into the motor when i went to take them off the motor started to drop down do i need to hold it up or will it be ok without the mount attached for awile so i can figure this thing out. does someone make a book like they do for cars with instructions on how to take things apart

Why are you taking the motor mount apart?.....
Put it back together, before you screw something up that wasn't before...
Yes there is a thing called a service manual, in your case you need Merc. service manual #2.....
They pop up on ebay.....
I suggest that you purchase one & familiarize yourself with your particular engine before proceeding further.....
Look at Don S post to localize your starting problem....​

i was tring to put the belt back on thats why i had to take the front mount off so i just hung the motor from its lift ring so that it would not drop down.so i could put the belt back on.i had the starter tested and it was locked up so now i got to find one i would like to find one used can you help

Take it to a reputable starter/alterntor shop in your area & have it rebuilt or see what kind of prices you can get off ebay......
I would go with new or rebuilt, not used.....​
