Well I am in the process of changing the seals on my motor and have come to two roadblocks where I could really use some advice.

The first is; I can't seem to slide the bearing head off the prop shaft. It slides on the shaft OK but stops at the end. I don't know if I am just supposed to pull really hard or if I need to do something else to get it off. I want to change the seal around the prop shaft and do not want to break anything.

The second issue is getting the shift rod bushing out of its hole. Has anyone gerry rigged up a tool to punch it out or pull it out, so the O'ring can be replaced. Again I do not want to ruin this busing but it seems to be in there tight.

Any help on one or all of these issues would be surely appreciated.

Sounds like the drive pin (shear pin) hole is worn outward somewhat. File it down to the diameter of the shaft.

Others here have made a tool to remove that shift bushing. I'm sure they'll be along shortly.

Yep, get the file out (I just pulled a 61 5.5 LU apart yesterday)...seems the torque is all applied at the rear with the shear and cotter..mushrooms over time..file down, polish a bit with 320/400 grit..oil it, and give it a yank.
On the seal, ya need a slide hammer ( of some sort) with a screw to dig into the seal, then yank it out..you will not be able to save it..also can drive a drywall screw in it, vise grips, hammer it out

Thanks for your responses. Scaaty, when you say you could drive a drywall screw in it ... and ... you will not be able to save it. Are you referring to the brass bushing or the o'ring. I am not concerned with saving the old o'ring, but was intending to reuse the brass bushing.

I will try the fine sanding on the shear pin hole. I suspected it was something like that but did not want to force it.

Thanks a lot for all your advice. The sanding of the prop shaft around the shear pin did the trick.

When I re-install the new seals, should I use OMC sealer 1000 material on the outside edges (between metal of motor and metal of seal) or just bang them in dry?

Well the deed is done. Put in the new seals in my motor, gave it about a 3 to 4 hour operational test on the water and then checked the lower unit oil and there was no signs of water (before I would get water after an hour for sure). Motor runs great.

Thanks again everyone, for all your help. Certainly could not have done this job without websites like this one and all the help from the responders.
