my boats been gettin to warm lately, so i'm doin me a impeller. so far so good and the impeller was intact. good.
question. on the lower drive shaft. at the top of the shaft. just under the spines is an oring groove. a while ago, i believe i was conviced by achris and others that it wasn't a necessary o ring.........should i put it back. it's painfull to install and unknown if ya got it right as it disappers just prior to install.......i'm contomplatein leaveing it out. left it out on my other 1 drive. but really didn't get enough time on it to determine one way or the other weather i liked the outcome or not......any notions one way or the other?

when ya miss linein up, it snags on the lower oil seal in the upper and removes it when ya remove the lower. don't know what happens when ya go the other way. i can't see it then....if i miss and it don't stay put. then i understand it can work its way down to the lower seal in the upper. possibly breakin that seal with the oring.....alpha 1 don't have the oring. lowers and upper are interchangeable from what i get.....

+ if it aint necessary. why bother with the grief it causes me. or maybe im the only one it causes greif too........:)

havein it fall off and break the seal at the bottom of the upper is of more concern though...and ya can't tell if that happens untill somethings amiss.......

well, i think i got the o ring installed. don't know, i couldn't see it. seems to have gone good. i got fwd, rev, neutral. i got cooling. though it aint changed much on the temp gage. still at least 1 mark high idlein it up in the driveway, 1000 to 1300 rpm. gonna water test it tommorow i hope. man, that o ring is a drag.............,missed about 30 times. i think it's the water tube or water tube guide that hoses me. anyways. did it wrong per the oem service manual. hit the water tube by puttin the water tube into the water pocket, then feedin it into the water tube guide. whatever. it seems to be performin in the driveway. tommorw will tell. and like usual, i lost the frikkin oring. where'd it go. man, if i didnt ruin the oil seal in the upper fishin for it i'll be lucky. darn thing fell onto the top of the lower, twds. the ft. of the drive. absoloty impossible to see. only feel or a mirror. that cost me a half hour....should have known too. previous 1 drive did that to me too. i forgot. took me 6.5 hrs start to finish. had to get parts, + drive to the searsmans for some tools. got new ss nyloc nuts at the hardware store and such......my guess is i aint done yet. my issue aint solved. but i do know that my impeller is good. did impeller and houseing..$110 at the mercruiser store, mercrusier parts. even got them to throw in 4 drain plug washers for that 110, cool huh....snicker........tommorow will tell.........

I must say....
It is far easier to put the upper & lower together while both are removed & on a bench......
Way, way easier......;)

I did it the other day for the first time. worked fine in the living room on the makshft stand i rigged up... would have REALLY sucked to do it without removing the drive... besides, was hot as you know what outside, and cool in the house...

guess i'm gonna have to try that. i can't see why it'd be easier other than the lower is sure heavy tryin to mate upwards onto the upper. i'v read it to many times that removeal of the drive makes it easier to do the lower. do gots me an alignment bar too. though aint used it yet. but i will.............
