I have a 74 reinell with a 225hp omc set up and cant seem to get the system to charge. I have changed the alternator and voltage regulator, and am running out of ideas. Is it possible that my slave solinoid is bad or does that not affect the charging system? Any advice would be helpful

Have you had the battery checked to make sure it will take and hold a charge?

What is the output from the generator?

Slave solenoid has nothing to do with the alternator.

I am assuming you have the old style regulator that mounts on the thermostat housing. If you do find that either the alternator and regulater are bad, you may want to switch to a new single output alternator with the regulater built in. Those old OMC regulaters are pricey.

yes it is the style that has the regulator on the housing, can I just get a standard alt from an auto parts store or do you happen to know a part number for a single output alt. I just had mine rebuilt and put a new regulator on but if this will fix it I would buy a new one.

You always want to use a marine alternator.

Before you throw in the towel, try measuring the voltage output of what you have.

Re: omc charging problem

If battery, alternator and regulator test good, you may have a wiring problem drawing power from the battery.

Undo one cable from the battery and connect a small 12 volt lamp between the post and cable. If it lights, power is being drawn. (key off, no switches on)

One other thing to check, are the battery posts & clamps clean & shiny? Look for a thin black layer on one post. It's quite hard and not conductive.

Re: omc charging problem

found the problem there was a fusable link between the alt and the battery replaced it and low and behold that was the problem, just needed to follow through and chase wires. I did put a link back in but is that normal for boats to have a link in there it was a clean job so i replaced it but does it have to be there is my next question. I dont want to have it all scabbed together it is a good boat but dont want to cut corners just to make it run i want it done right and safe. thank all of you for your help I really do appreciate it.
