Greetings,

I was wondering what size boat would be needed to make a trip from Albany to New London. It would be down the Hudson River, across NYC and along Long Island Sound.

I have 15 foot trihull with a 40 HP outboard. Would this boat handle such a trip?

Thanks

The biggest issue will be fuel supply my 19' has 36 gallon tank and i generaly find 90 to 100 miles is about the safe range to leave 1/3 of a tank in reserve

The 15 ' would be very small passing through the shiping trafic in NYC and LI sound is very rough at many times with afternoon thunder storms that pass through fast

I would never take such a trip in such a small boat. There are huge ships in the area that would dwarf your tiny boat.

Don't even think of it. A 15' boat has no business on trip like that in Long Island Sound. A deep V 21' would be the minimum. Even then you would have to watch the weather and be careful.

Thanks. I guess I'll cross that off my "Things to do before I turn 50" list.

I ran the Hudson from Manhattan to Canada in a 15 footer when I was younger. Do-able but you gotta have big nads. Your 15 is a wave slapper. Fuel is not a problem on the Hudson. I did it with 3 six gal tanks and a 55hp.--Buy the charts from the parks commission? They show all the marinas and services. I have also circumnavigated Manhattan in the 15 footer. I had the pleasure of almost being run down by a 100 footer in the East River and taking green water over the windshield. New York boaters give you no slack. Like I said, you need big nads.
Going up north to Canada is tame by comparison and the locks are an experience. On a nice day, Champlain is beautiful but in bad weather it get 5 foot plus waves. Do-able, I did it twice. But --Big Nads--4 days up from peekskill to Montreal and 4 days back.

Now the sound? That's another story. Not too bad by Mamaroneck and the Glen Island Casino (if it is still there). And Hells Gate is really no problem for a boat with that power. But further out you would be taking what the Coast Guard calls a "Manifestly unsafe" journey. If you stay close to shore it might be do-able --fishermen use small boats all the time--but that is a long, uncomfortable trip. And fuel on the sound may be a problem.
