I purchased a boat and motor. It is too big for the size of the boat. It runs well, it is a 30 Horse, 1956 Johnson. It has control cables. I would like to sell it, but wonder what it would be worth. Anyone able to help?

Re: '56 Johnson

problem I find with motors that old is people are afraid of them. They are still good motors and will last a long time given the proper maintenance, but since people are afraid of them they can be hard to sell. I agree with tashasdaddy about price. Although people don't like ebay it is still a good indication of price, but it's regional. Look and see what they have sold for recently.

Where are you? Reason I ask is there may a chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club in your area with a swap meeting coming up. Check www.aomci.org to see. You might could sell/swap your Johnson 35 hp at one of those meets for something that better suits your needs and find the old Johnson a home with someone who appreciates the old iron. Good luck.

Exactly what I was going to say. Try aomci.org and post a blurb in their classifieds and ask for a swap or cash. You'll never know what folks want to trade for until you try and the folks on aomci appreciate the old engines a lot more... in fact, a '56 is pretty new for them!

Oh, and an fyi, I recently got a '56 30hp and a '57 35hp for $100 where I live (Canada). The guy said the '57 ran and he did not know about the '56 (which was partially disassembled) but both seemed to have good compression via the pull start.
