O.K. team I'm not a boater but the kid and my neighbor are fishing nut's! Now the old man's boat took a dump and sold the out board last week, and I'm trying to help them find a new/old used boat. what can I say were all on a budget. Now I work with a Guy who has a 80 something SEA Ray with a 110 white merc?? now I asked the dealer about it and was told that merc's were white back in the 60's? now this boat has been stored indoors for the last 15 years (Pole barn) and all look's like new-- old but like new I can get the whole rig for a case of molson and a shake of the hand, but if it's that old I don't think the two king fisher's would be safe. I'm good with the tools but not so good on the water any advice would be great thank you

Re: White Merc?

Nothing wrong with an old merc. Post the serial # so someone can let you know exactly what it is. Also what needs to be done.:)

Re: White Merc?

I was told that it is factory painted, and it's a early 80's model ? it is painted to match the boat, even factory pin striped.

Merc switched to Black around 1962. No way they made a white 80's that I know of. Maybe a repaint, as decals and striping are just that, and could be bought. We need some numbers off it (any old Merc for a case of beer is a deal anyway though!:D)

Re: White Merc?

Back in the 80s Mercury did market white motors under the Sea Ray name when Brunswick first bought Sea Ray boat company

Re: White Merc?

Nothing wrong with the Mercury motor but I would be a bit hesitant to buy a Sea Ray boat given the known inferior resin that causes a lot of osmotic blistering problems in the hulls. Buyer beware. Better bet would be a Boston whaler.

Re: White Merc?

mwagne30, there is no difference other than the paint between a white Sea Ray, black Mercury and a gray Mariner engine of equal HP they all would come down the same line on the same day. At the plant you could look up above the line and see them headed for the test cell to be run

Re: White Merc?

O.k. team it look's like it not from the stoneage , and yes it is a real Merc, not a chrysler-force. so I guess the next question is this, we will bring it home pull the water pump replace?- new plugs, carb cleaner-sea foam deep clean and yes we have been told that some of the old sea ray's had some gell coat issues but remember the price- one(1) case of molson ice! now if anyone can tell me of a boston whaler at that price, thank you two case's for you! now remember it's been in the pole barn coverd for 17 years should I try anything else- carb rebuild, coils? or should I drop it in the water and just do it ? and go for broke? Did I mention that it has a s.s. prop?
