I just purchased a '73 6hp Evinrude. It started right up and went throught the gears just fine. I took it home and a week later it started right up and went through the gears just fine. The next day I went to start it before I took it to the river and it didn't even come close to starting.

I have ordered a Seloc service manual but could use some suggestions on where to start. What could have gone wrong from one day to the next sitting in my garage?

I have noticed that sometimes it won't go into gear. Sometimes just forward, sometimes just reverse, sometimes both, sometimes neither!

Also, it sounds as if it is not even trying to start. Like if you pulled the cord with the throttle on 'stop'.

It have new gas with 50:1 oil. The spark plugs are (and were) clean. Gas is definitely getting through to the engine. I am starting according to instructions - neutral, throttle on 'start', choke out.
thanks.

Compression test, and spark test.

Could be that your kill switch is faulty. But, I think you're going to find that you need to replace the coils. Those old coils don't age very well.

Trying to shift with the motor not running is a hit-or-miss situation....literally. You may have to twirl the propeller a bit to get the gears to "fit".

Take a look in the Engine FAQs, Amigo.

Re: 1973 6hp Evinrude

the good news is that I can consistently get the engine started by turning the throttle well past the start position.

The bad news is that the motor won't run at any position lower than start.

The throttle seems to have normal operating range - stoping at the "Stop" position and going well past "Fast". (Stop - Slow - Shift - Start - Fast) The motor idles when at the "Start" position and cuts off below that.

Am I loosing top end power because of this? I plan to get it in the water this week but since it is a new motor to me I won't have a comparison.

I think you'll find you're running on one cylinder. Spark test and compression test will help you figure it all out.
