I've got an early 80's, 80 HP Mercury outboard in-line 4 cyl. I want to get a manual so I don't have to bother you guys on the forum with stupid questions that are answered in a manual.

Where do I find the serial Number or other Identification to help narrow this down? I popped the cover and the Switch box Part Number is 332-5772A1 and a number stamped on the top of the motor is 72973.

Motor won't start, I've got minimal spark on the top plug, going down...plugs 2 and 3 have no spark, can't get to #4 down inside the lower housing. The guy that worked on it said that I need a new "Brain Box" what ever that is? Maybe he meant switch box? Who knows... anyway I would like to find out what manual I need and buy it.

Thanx
Mike

Re: Not sure on Motor ID

Thanx Laddies, That will be a big help. Where can I get the manual that the info came from? Or is that "factory type" repair manual?

Found the S/N it looks like it's 6394026. It was on the trans. mnt casting. How ironic, I used to work for the company that cast those :)

Is there any way to determine the year by this number?

That number shows it as a 1983 model. The factory service manual is the best.
