G'day from Australia.

This is my first time with a Force 70 hp motor. The person i bought the Force 70 from got it going before i bought the motor. When i got it home i have been unable to start the motor. I have done the following:
(1) new clean fuel with correct fuel/oil mix (50:1)
(2) cleaned the Carberator
(3) all new NGK spark plugs (unable to find and champion L76V locally)
(4) fully charged both battery
(5) sprayed 'easy start' (A CRC product) into the carbarator

The starter motor turns the crank, the emergency stop lynard is connected.

What am i not doing right?? please help

Cheers

Maybe try checking for spark. Make sure it is a good quality spark also. Sounds to me if you sprayed a starting aid into the engine and it still did not fire than I don't think it's a fuel problem. I'm betting on ignition related.

Welcome to iboats Bateman.
Glad you are able to log in to the forums, as many of your countrymen have been having difficulties.

Don't use starting fluid in your 2 stroke motor. Use a squirt bottle filled with premixed fuel.

a- pump up the fuel line primer bulb until firm.
b- Advance the throttle to 3/4, without shifting into gear.
Done by pulling the shift handle toward the driver, OR, by pushing in a button at the pivot center of the shift handle.
c- Push in the key and hold it in, to activate the choke.
d- turn the key to start.

e- When it starts, turn the key to run, release the key to disengage the choke.

f- pull the throttle handle back to the neutral position to prevent the engine from over revving.

Re: Force 70hp wont start

As Nate suggests, try checking for a spark - I've just been through a similar thing with my 1991 70hp.

Turned out I had a bad stator. The low speed coils had burned out and it wasn't generating enough power for a spark at cranking speed. The rectifier was also toast - I assume one blew and took the other with it. At least the Clymer manual suggests that can happen.

It had similar symptoms to yours though, in that it started fine one minute and never fired again the next.

Could be something as simple as a grounded engine kill wire though. Try disconnecting the black/yellow wire from the switchbox and see if it starts. Be prepared to re-ground the kill pin though as you won't be able to stop the engine.

If not then you'll need to test the stator and other components. Let us know how you get on.

I'd verify ignition timing. Make sure you are pushing in on the key to activate the choke solenoid. (You should hear it 'click'.) If all is okay, better take a close look at the needle and seat in the float bowls. They might be sticking closed......

Re: Force 70hp wont start

I am also haveing problems with a force engine hope someone can help. I have a 1988 85 hp force (thats probaly my first problem) I have spark on 2 and 3 but not on one. I've changed the coil packs around. I took the coil off of 2 which was working and put it for number 1 and 1 for 2 still no sparkon 1 but spark on 2 so the coil pack is good. . I changed the cdi pack took the front which runs cyl 1 and 2 same thing spark on 2 but not on 1 even though they both run off the same pack (don't understand why that is unless one side goes bad) Thought maybe the stator changed that, same problem no spark on 1 but good spark on 2 and 3. now the odds of everything that I changed all being bad and causeing the same problem....not likely so....I was thinking maybe ground issue but then if that was the case i might not have any spark but I do. I also changed the trigger still no spark on 1. Now when i reverse the wires on the cdi pack they are org/red and switch them then I have spark on 1 but not on 2. I have also replaced all the wire ends with new ones thinking there was a broke wire same problem. Please help Thanks for any answers you can come up with. Signed FUSTRATED

Re: Force 70hp wont start

Open fuel tank vent

Check the kill switch, place in "run" position

Squeeze fuel primer bulb till firm.

Advance the throttle 3/4 way, without putting it in gear. -- This is done by either pushing a button in the center of the controls, or pulling the shift handle toward the driver, or raising the fast idle lever, all depending on what control unit you have.

Activate the choke (fuel enrichment valve) by pushing in on the key. The valve is only open while the key is being pushed in.

Turn the key to start while continuing to hold the key in.

Release the key and choke when it starts.

3-5 seconds of "choke", is usually enough.

Be ready to pull the throttle back toward the idle/neutral position, when the engine starts and the revs increase.

Continue to pull the throttle back as the engine warms up.

You should not have to use the choke much, if at all, once the engine has warmed up.

Engine should start within 10 seconds of turning the key.
