Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

went out saturday got pulled over and everything checked out good, other than when i got the registration out and went to hand it over the side of the boat bye bye atm card. guess the fish won't spend to much. After talking with the boat and fish officer called to get a replacement card sent out and all went well .We came out of the cove just in time to see a life flight chopper landing. spent all day sunday trying to find out what happened and a wonderful  trip to pittsburgh never found out well yesterday morning first at the dock and noone on the water talked with the officer to find out that a tree fell on someone working on their boat . Also found out that sunday they had a couple with a brand new bayliner (first boat) launch and make it about 50 feet and sunk when it was recovered there was no plug and about 2500 pounds over the weight rating. so all in all I had a decent trip compared to others there.
PS thanks to you guys i didn't have a problem with the boat officers at all everything was well in order.

Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

Launched the boat Saturday. It overheated ('72 Chrysler) soon after it planed out. Turn around and came back in on the trolling motor. She ran flawlessly the week before. I take a look this week to see if it got stopped up or something. It's got less than 10 hours on the impeller.

I was surprised... the ramp was pretty quiet yesterday.
Nice day on the lake... a little bumpy early, then it settled down.

I386... had the same thing happen two years ago on Labor Day. Weird... the brass hub separated from the rubber impeller.!

All went well on the lake and the ramp.....but on the way home we pull thru the food from a window place.."IN&OUT for those of you in California"....the young lady asked if we needed catsup...I replied, No Thank You, we have some at home....the dumbfounded look on her face was priceless, she asked again....she just could'nt understand that we would be eating at home.....

No boating, although we shoulda, went to the Beach on Sunday, small party at friends last night. Three hour power outage last afternoon/evening, just got the lanterns and candles lit when voila . . . I guess that's Murphy's Law of Power Outages. Thankfully it was a pool party as Global Warming kicked in here over the weekend. Run!!!!

....well up here in the PNWest...it was a cool/cloudy weekend thus topping a fairly crappy summer this year.
We didn't do much...the highlight was going to the local agricultural fair to watch the heavy horse competition....that was great.
No boating tho' although hopefully the fall may bring some reasonable weather before the frikkin' rain moves in on us...again.

Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

Spent time with my wife and son. Went swimming a couple times. Went to the gym. Waited to launch the boat until Monday mid-afternoon.

Went to first ramp. Doh! new to area. Need sticker to launch for free or pay Mucho $. Either way you need to get sticker at court house.

New to area. Went to next ramp. Launch free, no people, no waiting, no parking, Dang!

Next ramp furthest away. 2 boat trailers in parking lot. Great. Get boat in water when one of the boats shows up to come in. No problem right? Wrong. My old motor needs to have time to warm up. The motor won't start. I pull about 20 times in 30 seconds Starts up and I back out of the way with a blister on my middle finger. (allthough it is great for the "want to see my blister gag?")

Go down river to get the motor warmed up. After warming, go to idle, and it coughs and dies. Restart, cough die at idle. Go for longer ride and try to adjust it a bunch of times. Cough and die at slow speed.

Keep going down river (40 yards across). Did I mention I was in a 14' Jon boat with 1957 7.5 HP with a fishing prop and 3 people in the boat. (not overloaded, but pretty well loaded). When we get out of the no wake area, a lot of boats running full speed past us. No problem we stay well out of the way, but have to turn into the wakes so we don't get water over the sides.

The last boat that comes towards us is fully loaded pontoon boat. about 12 people on board running wide open, but causing a big wake. My wife is riding backwards so she does not see. I see the people in the pontoon start laughing and making hand gestures to the other people on board that could only be watch what happens when our wake hits them.

No problem for me, I turn into the wake at an angle, but the wake still hits hard enough to to get my wife pretty wet.

We turn around and head back up river. When we get to the launch, there is a boat that is going to launch. The people are prepping the boat at the ramp. We wait and do some figure eights at idle. Motor runs great at idle, awesome even.

While waiting, a bumble bee takes a liking to me. It keeps trying to land on me. I hit the gas and get away, then come back to do some more idling. The motor not only won't idle, but keeps missing and quitting at slower than fast speed. Coming into the ramp, it quits with us just out from the ramp. I use a cushion to paddle to the ramp because paddles are stowed.

On the way home, I ask my 15 year-old son if he wants to see my blister.

The end to a great weekend. Even though the motor gave us problems, I had great company and awesome weather.

Update, not a request for help...

I pulled the LU and checked the water pump. Impeller still looks brand new. Still got plenty of spring left in it too as I had to pull it out of the pump housing. I flushed the engine in both directions. Flow did not appear to be obstructed. I put it all back together and it started and ran fine. Water was pumping and the head remained tolerable to touch for as high RPM as I can run in neutral. So it looks like I may have an intermittent problem or something flushed out and I missed it. Will try an take it out again soon and see if occurs again.

Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

On the way down to the lake, the roads were busy getting out of town. I finally hit the open road and was making up a bit of time, when I looked up and saw that my exit was coming up. While I was checking my blind spot to get into the right lane, I came over a hill and noticed that there was a solid line of cars a very long way before the exit. By this time, I had already passed the end of the line, which was in the breakdown lane. Nobody was behind me, so I tried to merge in near the back, but nobody would let me. When cars started coming behind me, I had to go up to the exit and cut in line. One woman was hanging half her body out of a minivan flipping me off, cussing, and honking her horn. I can only wonder if her kids were with her. It was at exactly this moment that I realized that I didn't really want to be going to the lake this weekend.

After I got my boat fixed (another post in the stupid tricks while boating forum), the lke wasn't too crowded (because I went 300 miles south of town to a more secluded lake), and we had a good time.

Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

Well, time for another rant. I was supposed to be fishing an online tourney (just a simple lil' gig on another forum, where the forum owner, has lots o' money, and likes giving it away to fellow forum members. So, he has a couple contests on the holidays, basically you snap a pic, with a secret item that he announces at the start of the weekend, so you can't prefish and cheat)
Well, I wasn't about to be out on Allatoona (large reservoir a couple minutes away) So, we go to a smaller electric only lake that spills over into Allatoona (it is a nice place, with LOTSA grass, and good cover, that spills over into the bare nothingness of Allatoona. Amazing what a simple concrete wall can separate) It is a park for a town neighboring to ours. So, it has a nice parking lot, with lots of playgrounds, and walk trails, and they have events every holiday. But, the boat ramp is just an old road leading down the hill, from before the lake was there. And, there is just an overgrown gravel parking lot for the boat ramp.
Well, we pull in at about 7:30 (events apparently start at 8 - first time being there on a holiday) and they have this huge festival set up. Then, we get over to the end, where the ramp is, and they have 3 raffle trucks parked in the middle of the ramp. So, there are a couple of teenagers with an old beat up 14er (with the dixie flags and all) who had carried their boat to the water, and then parked the trailer in a school a mile away. We had backed to the grassy embankment, and were gonna carry it off, and the guy that pulled in behind us talked to the people setting up, and they said no boats on the lake, and you better get out of here, before they shut the gate (only shuttles allowed after eight) Dam. That sucks. So we get out, knowing that we will have to wait till 5 to get out, when the gate opens, to pull out, and we had things to do, about noon. Guess where we are never going on a holiday. What really irks me, is that no one bother telling us that we couldn't do that, just watched. There were 3 jon boats lined up ready to slide down the grass, and the guys waited for someone to ask, before commenting. I can understand it, but am still annoyed. If they let us in, they would have to have someone at the other gate (the only open one was at the far end from the ramp, to let shuttles in) If they left it open, they would have to many non boating people bring their cars in, and, the number of trailers might cause a parking situation. But still, there was no bulletin on any of the local fishing boards, nothing. That is what annoys me.

Rant over.

Re: Waiting for Labor Day weekend stories.

i think it was the thur. before the big weekend. went to the ramp to off load. cool, only me and one other cat puttin in. and he's already got his boat in the slip. it was a couple a young men. college students maybe. had a nice cc with a yammy on the back. sweet. so i'm prepin, the college guys are gettin their gear. ya know, wakeboards, skiis, lateeda. so i'm watchin their boat as it starts driftin out of the slip. hum.........so i yell on over at these fellas, hey man, is yer boat tied up. very non chlauntly they say nope. so i say, oh, well it's startin to float away then........these fella respond that oh, well, we thought we'd be back down in time. it was pretty calm, but non the less, their boats floatin away. they continued to get there gear together as there boats floating into the bay. guess if they ain't concererned, neither am i. so they got all there stuff under their arms and head on down to the dock. of corse they were in there swim trunks for a day of watersports i'd say. they set the gear down on the dock and one of them jumps in and goes and gets the boat......only thing that wasn't funny was that they were too prepared for the situation. it was no big deal...just a little swim prior to watersports i guess......
