I have a 1970 25 hp sportster... when I first got mine, I found out the spring that activates the choke butterfly on the outside of the carb had a notch worn into it, so would catch and the choke would usually not work properly (but occasionally it slide over the catch and it'd work ok)...
I took the carb off, took that spring off, and unwound it 1 coil so that it was smooth at the point that it rubs on the butterfly cam... the choke's been working well for ~ 5 years now. When I found this, I figured it must be a really common problem on these oldies, but I've never heard of anyone else having it.
