What is the correct term for the top fibreglass peice on an outboard engine ... the part that encloses the engine. I call it a hood, but have also heard it referred to as the cowling. Which is correct?

Re: Correct Terminology ???

In some places it's called a "bonnet".

If you have to buy one it's called "expensive". Among other things.

Re: Correct Terminology ???

Perhaps I should expand on my predicament somewhat ... I have a 1972 25HP Evinrude Sportster. Due to an unfortunate mishap, I am no longer in possesion of the hood/cowling/motor cover/bonnet/expensive fibreglass piece that sits on top of the engine and I need one ... the rest of the engine is in excellent condition.

I'm sure there's a good story there someplace.

You can find them on e-bay and craigslist from time-to time.

Yep, search ebay or CL, and call at any local dealers

There is an excellent story behind it that relly illustrates how stupid men can be when we show off for women ... LOL

What is CraigsList?
Yes I have tried all the local dealers ... many times over.

type craigslist.com pick the city closest to where you live, click boats.

I figured it was a case of "fish dumb".

I guess it's a case of, well . . . something else dumb.

While looking for your cowling, go to the stupid human tricks section of the forum and post the story man, we have to hear it now.

I got me one, Real nice, real cheap for a 73 25hp, I think $25. Try Tims Outboard 218 682 2331. Lots of salvage parts.

Re: Correct Terminology ???

If you search ebay, you need to search on "cowl", "cowling", "hood", "cover", etc, because the terminology is not consistent.

Also look at your local dealers/boat shops' boneyards. Rember, just get one that fits, it doesn't have to be same HP, just the same size of engine and the same "era". Of course, Evinrude will fit similar size Johnson.

Then, if needed, it is pretty easy to re-paint. Just strip, sand and do a good paint job. You can often get it prof. painted at a body shop for cheap. Easy to find OEM paints or have paint shops match. New decals are often available on ebay or from dealer, or you can have a local sign / auto trim shop make some for you.
