Or so I think it is an antique. I just purchased a Model TD-20. 5HP. It still has strong compression and in fact still had gas and clean plugs. It is my intent to restore it to original condition. Does anyone know what year it is or in what range of years it was built. In addition I need to know if there is a place that sells original replacement decals for the cowling? It may have been originally all paint so if decals are not available, a site that would show a picture of the model in its original condition.

Built from 1946-49. Post your model and serial number and we can tell you the exact year.

Dump the old gas. You will probably need to clean the entire fuel system and carb if its full of old gas. PM me your email address and I'll send you the parts manual for your motor. you might be able to get the decals at nymarine.ca

Pop the flywheel and look at the coils..99% are cracked. Easy to find new stuff ($20 each). Great little motors..sold all mine off. Lots of parts on Ebay. Decals and paint here

Gosh. There are so many TD-20s still in regular service that it's easy to forget that they are eligible for AARP membership, and pretty close to Social Security.

Although the first TD20's are now 61 years old, they are not "antique" in my view, but should more appropriately be termed "seasoned" engines! I have two of them. One of them my Dad bought new in 1946 and has never been apart.

Are you sure about those coils, Scaaty? I think the TD's have the older style horseshoe coils. They might still be ok.

It is classified as an antique by the Antique Outboard Motor Club....just barely.

Somebody remarked that it was made before OMC figured out how to make coils that crack open every 4 years. They are dang near bulletproof. Take the points apart and polish each contact individually. But do it one set at a time so you have a pattern and don't lose all the little insulating gizmos. Set them at .020 and it'll run. See the black, greasy points in the picture?

try aomci.org for parts... I have 4 of those engines but have not really tried to get any of em going yet... I hate removing gas tanks on the smaller engines... yeah, I know... I'm lazy! It's good to know the old coils go forever though :) I hear carb parts are hard to come by though...

Yep, your right......had more TN's than TD's.. the horseshoe is the early TD..(I have 2 I kept)...not exactly sure when they went to the newer style...but HS style can be found on Ebay, or Laings would know...and looks like FR nailed it anyway...

It was right around then '51 or so I believe.. My '50 7.5 runs well so I have not pulled the gas tank and flywheel yet to see what's under it!

Re: Antique Johnson Outboard

I was going to post a separate question regarding my Model 4434 7.5 hp 1950 Evinrude Twin Fleetwin, but now might be the time. A good while back I found a web site showing how to retrofit the old coils with new coil cores while using the original coil laminations. Heck, they even had pics of the process. I've searched all over the web looking for that page but have had no luck finding it. I just knew sooner or later that info would come in handy, but didn't save the page contents.

Anyone have a clue about what I'm referring to??

I'd like to see that post too. Sounds like it deserves a sticky at the top of the forum.
