I've got a 1985 Merc 500. Does anybody know the weight of this motor? I'm thinking about using a Transom Elevator that's rated for a 40hp. I'd like to do some weight comparisons.

Thanks

176# use care the HP rating has nothing to do with weight it is based on engine torque or thrust

Mmmmm. I have a 13’, 1970, Boston Whaler that’s designed for a short shaft. I have a Merc 500 long shaft on the boat. The transom comes with a cutout for the short shaft.. I don’t want any type of setback. The way I see it, my options, with my combination of boat and motor are either a purchased elevator or make a home grown one. T&R makes this one:

For a home grown one, I was thinking about using two pieces of steal plating. One inside the boat and one outside the boat. Then filling the gap with marine plywood. I really don’t want to dump the motor for another motor.

Any thoughts?

Only 145lb. A 2007 40ELPT BIGFOOT EFI 4 stroke is 264lb. I know weight is only part of the story, but that a 119lb difference. Is 10 extra hp greater stress than 119lb of weight? Am I missing something? Wouldn’t be the first time. Any reasons why I shouldn’t use an extender rated for 40hp with a 50hp motor?

Thanks again,

Tom
