I have a 57 johnson 35hp motor they have installed a newer lower end on it .it wont shift into reverse can anybody help me

just did a lower unit rebuild on my 56 30 hp. if you do not get the shift rod,s aligned just right you will have problems.mine works great now ,had to put in a new clutch dog.

Sounds like maybe when the re-installed the phillips head pivot-pin at the bottom of the gearcase, they missed the hole in the shift fork. Whoever "they" are, I'd take it back to them.

i have a 58 35, and agree with cougar. check the linkage, on the side of the leg.

Agree, check the linkage thru the inspection cover on the side. See if there is slop. If you move the shift lever, the rod should move up and down with no lost motion. If there is lost motion, the problem is up under the powerhead. There is a lever in there that comes loose. The shaft that the shift lever is attached to also wears very badly where it goes through the housing. Actually, it is the housing that eats away around the shaft.
