We had a pesky 1976 Johnson 70 that wouldn't idle no matter what you tried. After about 15 years we finally sold it to some poor soul who inherited 3 cylinders of trouble.

Good riddance!

1995 johnson 8hp. Fix one problem it would get another, funnily enough it got drowned when we had severe flooding on the lake, pulled the flywheel and the head, hosed it out to get rid of the salt sprayed it with inox and it never ran better. got rid of it not long after that it was only a matter of time.

It was a happy day to get rid of the Cobra Sterndrive. I hated winterizing that thing.

A Honda 10.

I was delighted the day it got stolen. Parts were nearly impossible to get and it needed lots of them constantly.

A Suzuki 140 HP DT-140.

Bought it brand new. It never ran right from day one. Always had a vibration at mid range. The carburetors had to be disassembled and cleaned at least once per year no matter how the fuel was treated.

My friend's 1969 Mercury 7.5 hp. That thing left us stranded so many times. I finally convinced him to sell it and I lent him a 1958 Johnson 10 hp and a 1956 Evinrude 7.5 hp. He couldn't be happier.

I'm also looking forward to selling a 1968 Mercury 3.9hp. Too many cooling problems.

I will concur on the Gamefisher model. I fussed with one for a full day and finally got it to run fairly well - or as well as they will ever run. Loud, buzzy thing. And to top it off, the prop fouled in weeds, the motor revved and the rod let go through the crankcase. Because I expected to be working on it more I hadn't even tried to put the tin can cowling back on and a bit of the aluminum crankcase embedded itelf in my skin on my chest. Daggone thing bit me even as it was committing hari-kari... I managed to get $20.00 out of it from some poor sap who wanted the lower unit...

1998 150 FICHT. Had all the upgrades, new heads, reprograming, etc. Complete replacement of powerhead in 2001. In 2002 when I traded it on an I/O it had 49hrs and already had a scuffed/scored cylinder.

1963 40hp Johnson Electramatic. This baby had an overheating issue, never did find out what was causing it before my dad sold it.

Yamaha 2hp in the early 1970's. Bought brand new as a back up for my Fathers sailboat and doubled up as power for our dinghy. Not enough motor on too much boat. If you were coming in and the tide was going out then guess which way you went !!!!
Thankfully replaced by a 6hp Evinrude Fisherman that would get you back no matter what.

1996 40hp Force outboard made by Mercury. The motor and boat burnt to the ground last winter at the storage facility I keep it at. Happiest day of my life espcially since insurance covered it all. Hated that motor was a mistake impulse buy purchase from the start cause I got a "good deal" on it new at the end of that year.

It was actually kinda funny though cause when they called to say the place had burned down I really had to fake it that I was sad. Didnt want to sound like an arsonist LMAO!!

Re: Which outboard are you GLAD you got rid of?

My dad in his later years bought a Gamefisher 9.9 (Force). This thing was junk from the start. The fuel connections were all loose, which was a small problem, but you could never get the idle mixture right. It would constantly flood on cold start and if you idled it would die and be flooded.

I pleaded with my dad to let me rebuild his carb, but he didn't let me. POS.

Late 70s 45hp chrysler of course most chryslers got a bad rap. Had several that were somewhat ok. Always amazed me that a company with that much cash couldn't get it right. I think the specs were to tight. Curently have a 90 somthing gamefisher 15 hp that is my go to motor. But always wating for the other shoe to drop.

Re: Which outboard are you GLAD you got rid of?

It was this green lower unit with a white cover: 7.5 HP Sears motor. Probably a Game Fisher like the others above.

It was my first outboard probably about 35 years ago and the *!#*& thing would never start.

3 or 4 of us would rent an aluminum rowboat on the Boston coast and motor out about 5 miles to an area called Graves Light (yes we were all around 18, crazy, and thought to be immortal) but we always took home a mess of huge Haddocks when there were Haddock there, before the fleets fished them out.

That one cylinder Sears piece of crap would never start right away and idled awful. My arm still hurts just thinking about it.

195? Clinton Jet 6 hp. this is a model with a turbine at the place of the prop. Would be as noisy as a 115 6 cyl Merc and deliver approx 1.5 hp of power ...

HHMm I had a pair of 1985 ish 90HP Yamahas, one of them was a dream, the other was a nightmare, hard to start, regularly over heated (even when new) dripped oil, swivel beacket seized, trim leaked forever, but still at least one was good, gees I would have hated to have had the "bad" one on it's own, at least I had twins to get out of trouble, OH and the trim used to stick in the full tilt position if you were not careful.

Re: Which outboard are you GLAD you got rid of?

Just remembered a probably worse motor, I had an old Air cooled thing about 2HP 30 or so years ago, that thing would take you anywhere you wanted to go, BUT, never back home, you could go for ages, stop for a Jiffy, then pull the starter untill you had bleeding blisters or the rope broke, then row home, the minute it was home (and the rope was replaced) it would start first pull, I never remember ever motoring home with that thing, unless you just went out and "tricked" it by not stopping.
