It's only one nut that must be loosen in order to remove the pull start assembly (which has a broken spring). The problem is that this nut is located in a narrow hole. I can not get access to this nut with any familiar tools. This nut is marked "Rockford A". Anyone know what to do??

Hello Lars,
Not sure which bolt or nut you're referring to. There are four bolts that hold the top cowling in place. The rewind pulley (and related parts) are held in place with a screw from the top (outside). It is usually a Phillips head screw, although it could have been replaced. This screw is threaded into the center hub of the pulley. Once that is out, the whole assembly will drop out of the housing - be careful of the coiled spring - it'll pop out with little effort!

With the engine mounted on the boat, the pull start assembly is located on the right side, about the same size as a child's fist. This is fixed to the engine with this one "Rockford A" nut. I thought I could remove the pull start assembly through loosen this single nut, but I cannot? Do I have to remove everything starting from the top of the engine?

( as plain to see, I'm greener than grass in this matter)

Hello Lars,
How about posting your model number, as the side-slinger style rewinds were earlier than 1980. Helps if we're on the same page...

Hi Scott, good idea to post model number, but the engine is in our summer house, 350 km from here. I got back from there yesterday, not bringing the model number with me But it's possible that's it's older than 1980, not only possible but very likely, if you say so. If any help the color of the engine is light blue, with white plastic cover....

Hello Lars,
That covers pretty much all of Evinrudes from the 1970s...
In any case, the side-slinger rewinds have a shoulder bolt that holds it in place, plus one tiny bolt on a support arm that keeps it from spinning and sets the adjustment for how well the pinion teeth engage the flywheel teeth.
The shoulder bolt should be a 9/16" head that is easily accessible from the side. If yours has a nut in place of it, then someone has done some backyard engineering.

Re: 1980 Evinrude 4hp How loosen pull start assembly nut

Hello Scott,

This Evinrude was bought new from my mother to my brother at that time. It's still running as new, but the spring won't rewind the starter rope. It's only been used in a river in central-Norway and has never seen a garage nor seawater.
I will print out your instruction and bring it along next time going there...May 2008.

Scott, thanks for your help :)

Lars
