I have own this 25 hp johnson sea horse about 6 years. I has run like a champ with just a few minor things which were easily fixed. Recently I was out running the pensacola bay fishing. After about an hour I took off at a fast clip like normal when the engine decided to rev at high rpm and the engine slowed down. The motor sounded great but the it was crawling at trolling speeds. I have at the tilt now for a couple years and all was great. I tried it in reverse and at low rpm it would go backwards but give it more rpm and the engine would rev high like forward. I did read a couple of threads that indicated that maybe the hub was the problem and needed to be reset. Any thoughts..............would be appreciated. I spend about hour looking at threads....and only found a couple that might be.... Thanks

Your prop needs to be rehubbed. You can verify this by putting 2 marks opposite each other on the inner and outer hub. Try it again and check to see if the marks are still lined up. If not have the prop re-hubbed.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is the rehubbing something that I can do or does it need to go to a shop. I have the clymer manual and it does not really say anything about that in the gearcase section. Just trying to keep from being uninform. The shop near by in the Milton area is kind of shady....and was curious about the ball park figure that might be for fixing something like this if I have to bring to shop. Thanks again.

Definetely not something you can do yourself. There are thousands of pounds of pressure involved.

Props are relatively inexpensive, for that engine. They're available right here on iboats. Good prices too!

Okay so basically you are saying that the hub is built into prop and generally speaking a new prop is the best bet because the hub is built in and I should check out the props that are for sale on this website. Am I to assume that the part number might be on the old prop so as to get the right one? any information that is the right information is better then no informatin. I notice that for this motor they range from 9 inch to 12 inch and run about 87.00 dollars. Thanks again.....this is a great website and I have been checking it out for years.:)

hobbie,

Yes, the hub is built in and it takes tremendous pressure to get them in/out.

More than likely, you have an OEM prop. The original numbers will help in identifying what you have. If your boat is realtively light, that is probably the right prop. If it's heavy, I'd go with a lower pitch-your call.

I think the iboats folks can help you ID what you have and go from there.
