I will be looking @ 2 used boats this evening what do I need to look for as far as the stern drives are concerned

Have them loosen the lower drain plug and dribble a little out...clean, ok,...milky..run away. Of course they could have changed out the milky stuff first. And, after ya get whatever, drain anyway, and get new gaskets/orings anyway, and new oil. Check after a few water hours. Not much else ya can do by just looking at it...

after the engine is started should it be shifted to check for noise in the bearings

I would make sure shifting is easy and smooth without clunk.

Yep..make sure it attached to a water supply..anyone who wants to fire it up WITHOUT any water, even for a second, is something to walk away from too. Best to get a water test if things look good, and you are serious. Best to post here just what type of outdrive BEFORE buying...some you need to stay FAR away from..(actually if it aint a newer Merc or Volvo...walk)

move the drives left to right by hand to check for play. should be no more then an inch or two. if too much play, lots of $$$ to fix

If it says OMC on it Anywhere,........ Run, Don't walk,.....No matter how Cheap,....
